Fielding Deltas

kateybugg:

In Spirit, we have a tradition called “fielding a Delta”. I’m not sure if this in common within other corps, but in Spirit, it’s a big damn deal.

The idea is that an alum/former member gives a current member their Deltas to wear throughout the season or from DCI Atlanta on. It’s like carrying that person with you, and they’re experiences and love of the corps is with you. They get to march long after they’ve stopped. I was incredibly lucky to field my dad’s deltas last summer along with a former section leader of the Spirit cymbal line from 2000 and 2001. It was incredible to have those deltas along with my own around my neck, especially my dad’s (not to belittle the other delta I had). We wore them outside of our uniforms during retreat and finals to show our pride and love of our family.

I’ll be giving my deltas to my friend Dani. I’ll make the long drive to the last camp and I will watch the show and tell. I will watch my family play the music for a show I will never march, and I will most likely be sobbing violently. They will play “Salvation” and “Georgia”, and I know I won’t be able to compose myself. I will see Dad, Chris, Ben Pyles!, and Jim and I will be beside myself with guilt and longing. After all this, I will take Dani to the side, and I will give her my deltas. I have kept them with me nearly everyday since I got them. I have the traditional silver delta, the cymbal delta, and two grommets that were in my show pair of cymbals. I will continue to cry, and Dani, who never cries, will as well. I’ll tell her how much I love her and other personal things that I won’t think of until the moment, and then I will say goodbye to her and my deltas.

I can’t wait to see her with them, even though I know I will miss them terribly. I haven’t worn them lately because of the guilt, but I’ve been carrying them around in my backpack,  and on my bedside table in my dorm. I’m so happy that they will be on the field at Indy, and I’m so happy Dani will have a piece of me with her. That and the tons of care packages I’ll be sending everyone.

That’s all for today. Hope y’all enjoyed by tiny story about drum corps :D
